Body Dysmorphia
Sometimes what you see is what you get. When I look in the mirror, I sometimes still see the very heavy woman that I was formerly. Body dysmorphia is a very real condition that can overtake your life if not treated. This is a mental disorder in which you can’t stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance – a flaw that, to others, is either minor or not observable. Some of the signs and symptoms of body dysmorphia are:
- Being extremely preoccupied with a perceived flaw in appearance that to others can’t be seen or appears minor
- Strong belief that you have a defect in your appearance that makes you ugly or deformed
- Belief that others take special notice of your appearance in a negative way or mock you
- Constantly comparing your appearance with others
Treatment of body dysmorphic disorder may include cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. Signs and symptoms include being extremely preoccupied with a perceived flaw in appearance that to others can’t be seen or appears minor. Considering see a professional when shame and embarrassment becoming overwhelming and overtaking you. Body dysmorphia does not get better on its own so seeing help from a professional is in your best interest.
