Mikita Burton is All Things Mikita
Hi!
I’m Mikita. Busy mom of 3, social media maven, yoga instructor and a few other things I’m sure I’m forgetting!
About 5 years ago my life was changing. Changing in all the ways I didn’t want it to. My marriage was ending, I had reached my heaviest weight ever (about 275) could’ve been more, but I stopped getting in the scale. I needed to find a full time job, I needed a new place to live and everything was falling apart!
What didn’t help was being too heavy to keep up with my children and the doctors telling me I probably needed blood pressure medication. That was the day it all changed, we call this rock bottom.
I would love to tell you that rock bottom was a spring board and everything fell into place, but that’s not true. Things were a slow go and that’s is honestly the way it should be done. I started with a small change – I stopped drinking sweet tea. Seems insignificant, but it was a huge difference! In fact, when I started logging my food, my tea was 330 calories. Empty sugar calories, so you can imagine how that adds up.
Eventually, I added a veggie with every meal (including breakfast) and logged everything I ate until I got ahold of what I should be eating. As much as no one wants to hear it, the food you are consuming is so much more important than the exercise you’re doing.
I did start exercising again. Walking, taking boxing classes and yoga. I’ve always loved yoga but did not/do not have a “yoga body” but I love it! So much that I got certified and now teach weekly. I lost close to 100 pounds (depends on the day) and I’ve kept it off.
My advice, don’t wait. Start today! Don’t wait until January 1st. Don’t try to change everything at once, change 1 thing at a time. Find a person that inspires you, virtually or real life and look to them for motivation when you get tired!
